The story of Palestine begins in antiquity. The region, nestled in the eastern Mediterranean, has been inhabited for thousands of years. Its significance in the ancient world is evident from the many civilizations that left their marks on the land.
- Canaanites: The earliest inhabitants of Palestine, known as Canaanites, settled in the region around 3000 BCE. They established a sophisticated society with cities and agriculture, often engaging in trade with the neighboring civilizations.
- Israelites: In the 12th century BCE, the Israelites, led by figures like Moses and Joshua, migrated to the region and formed the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. The story of their exodus from Egypt, as described in the Hebrew Bible, is central to their identity.
- Phoenicians: The coastal areas of present-day Lebanon and parts of northern Palestine were home to the Phoenicians. They were renowned for their maritime skills, trade networks, and the creation of the first alphabet.
- Assyrian and Babylonian Empires: Palestine was subject to the conquests of the Assyrians and Babylonians, leading to the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BCE.
